Roche Molecular Diagnostics have established relationships with laboratories across the UK and Ireland in order to enable you, our customers, to see a working laboratory using Roche Molecular Diagnostics systems. Each laboratory uses a different combination of our popular systems range and has a different test portfolio.
This month we would like to introduce you to the Grantham & District Hospital NHS Trust.
The laboratory at Grantham is situated in the Grantham & District Hospital and is one of five major laboratory sites which form the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULH), with whom Path Links has a service contract. Clinical Pathology services in Lincolnshire are provided by Path Links, part of the Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust. Within Path Links, Microbiology services are currently provided at all five sites, with Bacteriology processing at Lincoln, Boston (which takes Grantham area samples) and Scunthorpe (which takes Grimsby area samples). Serology and Chlamydia testing takes place in Grimsby (which takes Scunthorpe area samples) and Grantham (which takes Lincoln and Boston samples).
On the Grantham site, 5 Microbiology staff are engaged in Serology and Chlamydia testing. Approximately 18,000 Chlamydia samples were processed in Grantham during the last year and around 30,000 samples are anticipated this year, as a result of the screening programme which began in February 2008.
Chlamydia testing is performed using 2 Tecan EVO 75s and 2 COBAS TaqMan® 48s. On a “normal” day, 2 batches each of 44 swab samples, plus, on alternate days, a batch of 44 urine samples are extracted and tested. This leaves spare capacity for future expansion of service.
